4While my friend, George, was reading in bed, two thieves /θiːf/ n. 贼 climbed into his kitchen.
我的朋友乔治在床上看书时，两个小偷爬进了他的厨房。
5After they had entered /'entə/ v. 进入 the house, they went into the dining room.
他们进了屋之后，又走进餐厅。
6It was very dark /dɑːk/ adj. 黑暗的, so they turned on a torch /tɔːtʃ/ n. 手电筒.
屋里很黑，于是他们打开了手电筒。
7Suddenly, they heard a voice /vɔɪs/ n. （说话的）声音 behind them.
突然，他们听到身后有个声音。
8'What's up? What's up?' someone called.
“怎么啦？怎么啦？”有人喊道。
9The thieves dropped the torch and ran away as quickly as they could.
小偷扔下手电筒，飞快地逃走了。
10George heard the noise and came downstairs quickly.
乔治听到响声，迅速下了楼。
11He turned on the light, but he couldn't see anyone.
他打开灯，但一个人也没看见。
12The thieves had already gone.
小偷们已经走了。
13But George's parrot /'pærət/ n. 鹦鹉, Henry, was still there.
但乔治的鹦鹉亨利还在那儿。
14'What's up, George?' he called.
“怎么啦，乔治？”它叫道。
15'Nothing, Henry,' George said and smiled.
“没什么，亨利，”乔治笑着说。
16'Go back to sleep.'
“回去睡吧。”
