1While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked his doctor to tell him whether his operation /ˌɒpə'reɪʃn/ n. 手术 had been successful /sək'sesfl/ adj. 成功的, but the doctor refused to do so.

7Then Dr. Millington asked the caller /'kɔːlə/ n. 打电话的人 if he was a relative /'relətɪv/ n. 亲戚 of the patient.

8'No,' the patient answered, 'I am Mr. John Gilbert.'
